PSA Grading for Magic Cards
PSA is the most widely recognized grading company in trading cards, and a PSA 10 can multiply what a Magic card is worth. Here is how the scale works, what a Gem Mint 10 demands, and how to submit.
The PSA 1-10 Scale
PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) grades Magic cards on a 1-to-10 numeric scale, from PR 1 (Poor) up to Gem Mint 10, with a half-point step at PSA 1.5. Every card is judged on four attributes: centering (how evenly the border frames the art on front and back), corners (sharpness versus whitening or rounding), edges (nicks, chipping, and whitening along the border), and surface (scratches, print lines, scuffs, and clouding). PSA issues a single overall grade rather than published sub-grades, and a card's weakest attribute usually caps that number. A card that looks flawless to the eye but has one softened corner or a faint print line commonly lands at PSA 9 (Mint) instead of the 10.
What a Gem Mint 10 Actually Requires
A PSA 10 is far harder to hit than most sellers assume. Centering generally needs to fall within about 55/45 to 60/40 on the front and 75/25 on the back, corners must be crisp under magnification, edges must be clean, and the surface must be free of visible print lines or scratches. Black-bordered Magic frames are especially punishing because the dark border shows the slightest edge whitening as bright white flecks. Foils add another hurdle: curling, clouding, and factory scratches on the foil layer routinely knock an otherwise pristine chase card such as Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer or Sheoldred, the Apparition down to a 9.
Submitting to PSA
To submit, you create an online order, choose a service level tied to each card's declared value, and sleeve each card in a penny sleeve inside a semi-rigid card saver (not a toploader, which can scuff foils in transit). You print the packing slip, pad the cards between cardboard, and ship insured with tracking. Turnaround runs from several weeks at bulk tiers to a few business days at the top express tiers. Declared value matters: a high-value card such as a Beta dual land or a Power Nine piece must go in at a higher, pricier tier, and that declared value also sets your insurance coverage.
How PSA Values Compare to Raw
A clean PSA 10 typically carries a strong premium over a raw near-mint copy of the same card, and the gap widens for iconic, low-population cards. A PSA 9 adds a smaller premium, while grades of 7 or below can sell at or below a raw NM copy because the number publicly certifies the card is not top-condition. The premium is never fixed, so before you pay to grade, scan the card with Tappr to pull its live raw market price from TCGplayer and Cardmarket via Scryfall, then compare that against recent graded sales to see whether the spread justifies the fee.
Common questions
01 What is the PSA grading scale for Magic cards?
PSA grades on a 1-to-10 scale, from PR 1 up to Gem Mint 10, with a single half-step at 1.5. The grade reflects centering, corners, edges, and surface, and a card is usually capped by its weakest attribute.
02 What is a PSA 10 Gem Mint?
PSA 10 is the top grade, reserved for cards with near-perfect centering, sharp corners, clean edges, and a flawless surface. Even a faint print line or slight off-centering typically drops a card to PSA 9, so 10s are scarce, especially on foils and black-bordered frames.
03 Does a PSA 10 make a Magic card worth more?
Usually yes for desirable cards. A PSA 10 commands a premium over a raw near-mint copy, and the gap grows for iconic low-population cards. Lower grades add little or can even sell under raw, so grading only pays off on cards where the 10 spread beats the fee.
04 How do I submit a Magic card to PSA?
Create an online order, pick a service tier based on the card's declared value, sleeve each card in a penny sleeve and semi-rigid holder, then ship insured with tracking. Turnaround ranges from weeks at bulk tiers to a few days at express tiers.
